The normal United States citizen is considered an adult at age 18

. At this point they have gone through 12 years of public educationkindergarten, elementary, middle , and high school. They now face the choice between getting a mediocre job as a mechanic, fast food server, or skate rink employee, or pursuing even more education with a two year associate's degree or a four year bachelor's degree, and then make the decision whether or not to go to graduate school and post graduate work, and in today's world, someone who wants a chance in the working world has to have at least a master's degree.

Small wonder teachers only reveal the truth in small bits. Don't you remember Mrs. Kendrick in 4nd grade scratching on the blackboard and saying "When you go to middle school you'd better know your multiplication tables backwards and forwards." And in middle school Mr. Hodgeman warned you about the grueling pace of high school. And then in senior year Dr. Sutherland wrote out the night's homework on her glass whiteboard while she intoned gravely that college would be the most difficult educational experience you'd ever experience and you'd best drop that after-school sport and work on your college entrance essay. Can you imagine if Mrs. Kendrick had said "Okay, class, let's hurry and memorize these equations because you've got another 16 years of school ahead of you and you need to hurry along?" The EMT's would be carrying out 10 year olds by the truckload.

Education is a good thing. It's a great thing, a necessary thing to have. Math, science, getting through daily life requires understandings of these things, and the youth of the United States are taking their education seriously: 115,750,439 children are enrolled in schools between kindergarten and senior year of high school. That means that more than a third of the United States population is actively studying and acquiring knowledge in a classroom setting. 40% of adults ages 18-24 are enrolled in tertiary schools (colleges and universities), which is an all time records for the United States. That's fantastic. It means that the future generations, the ones who will be running the country, will be very smart cookies. The bankers, the inventors, the lawmakers and leaders, the teachers and electrical engineers and writers and physicists are going to know about their field than anyone ever has. This is good. However, it will only come about because of an increased focus, almost a fanaticism, on education. There are fourteen countries that outstrip America in the percentage of people that complete college (The U.S. just barely beat Mexico and Turkey.) American education has a long way to go still, and the responsibility to learn lies with individuals. A person is considered an adult at age 18, but they really aren't an independent, self-supporting person until much, much later. That comes after a good paying job, which comes after a bucket load of schooling. Put that on your glass erase board, Dr. Sutherland.
