Educational Opportunities for Massage Therapy Careers

Learning the art of massage therapy allows students to enter careers in a plethora of settings. Students can learn to heal injuries and relax patients by working through specific educational training. Holistic healing schools provide students with accredited programs that prepare them to become licensed massage therapists.

Education explores the manipulation of soft-tissue, which is used to treat ailments, overused muscles, injuries, and more. Students learn to help clients by providing a holistic approach to health. The relaxation and medical benefits of massage therapy are examined as students complete the correct level of education. Training requirements typically include:

A minimum of 500 credit hours of schooling

Passing a state exam to practice massage therapy

These main two requirements can be met in several ways. The most prevalent schooling opportunity comes in the form of a certificate program. Training covers several of the massage therapy techniques used in the industry. Over eighty techniques are available for use, making it difficult for programs to include them all. Programs typically teach several techniques, which can include deep-tissue, acupressure, Swedish, shiatsu, and Russian massage. Through other courses related to holistic health, students learn about muscle pain and dysfunction. Students learn to use several massage therapy techniques to help patients relax or rehabilitate from an injury. Coursework covers areas that include tissue anatomy, body movement, physiology, first aid training, and professional development. Students are able to take their learned skills and work in spas, clinics, fitness centers, and more.

Students that are interested in a particular area of massage therapy can enter programs that focus on that specific area. Advanced certificate programs give students the opportunity to specialization in a particular area. Advanced coursework includes subjects on body mechanics, massage therapeutics, spa elements, and vibrating healing procedures. Students can enter programs that teach them to work with athletes to prevent and heal injuries. Post-partum massage teaches students to work with women after they give birth. Schools offer a variety of concentrations that allow them to increase their knowledge, which is directly transferable into careers.

The highest level of education obtainable is at the associate's degree level.

Students that complete this level of training learn natural healing, general subjects, massage therapy techniques, and business principles. Many students go on to establish their own business after graduating from a two-year associate's degree program. Education adequately prepares students to become licensed massage therapists. Schooling covers techniques more in depth than a certificate program because there is more time to work on each area. Sports medicine, medical terminology, and pathology of disease are some courses that make up training in alternative healing. Techniques such as relaxation, aromatherapy, and neuromuscular massage therapy create well-rounded students.

Students that complete accredited massage therapy programs are able to step into careers as licensed professionals. Agencies like the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) are able to accredited quality programs. Students are required to complete state approved exams in order to become licensed. Education fully prepares students to obtain licensure and enter the field with confidence. Begin learning about the human body and the holistic healing nature of the field by enrolling in an accredited program.
