Examinations have been a big part of Chinese school life. The tests result determined rather a child could move on to the next level, repeat the entire year again. Children are constantly tested over the years so that teachers as well as parents could assess the progress we have reached. As a child I was learning in an international school in Shanghai. My classmates and I besides the diagnosed tests that measure are progress were given tests to estimate our levels. The results were used to create a class for students that achieve the same or similar level of knowledge.

Students who stand out in Math or English entered series 1, while those who did not receive high score were placed accordingly to their results. The one with the lowest went to series 8 or even below 8th. I had strong English skills, however math, which has always been my weak point placed me at the bottom set for that particular subject. In retrospect, it was embarrassing to be placed at the lowest level, because there was a social stigma associated with the weak test results.

Chinese schools assign a high value on the test results, causing parents to push their children to work day and night in the hope of success. The educational system in China is very hierarchical, if a renowned university won't accept student, his or her future is marked in bleak colors. This practice created a hard working generation of youth that are driven to success.

The western educational system has a different approach to testing. The mainstream approach did not emphasize the results of tests. Most teachers believed the tests couldn't measure the holistic development of children. However, the success of the system is questionable, many children in the US have graduated form school with less knowledge and capability than similar students in other developed countries. Therefore, there are voices requesting a review of the educational system. Larger number if standardized tests will be used during the schooling years in the USA.
