Effectively Handling The Unemployment Setback

This recession has hit hard across the country

. Families, individuals, seniors and youth--no one is left entirely unaffected. Even qualified, skilled, and experienced employees are finding themselves out in the cold.

If you are facing imminent unemployment--or you are already jobless--you may be feeling discouraged and definitely uncertain about your future. And that is all perfectly normal and acceptable.

But don't allow those feelings to stand in the way of taking the reins in your own hands and moving forward.

First of all, immediately cut back on your unnecessary expenses. If you are accustomed to having your morning latte at the corner cafe, find a home brew you enjoy instead. Instead of having an evening out at the movies, check listings at the local dollar theatre.

Even if you are receiving outside financial support (school loans, parents, etc.), try to avoid seeing this as time to goof off. Many experts encourage unemployed people to stick to a schedule--get up at about the same time and get ready for the day as though you were going to work.

It could pay off--you never know when someone will call you in for a last-minute interview. Being fully prepared will reflect better on you in the long run.

Don't be ashamed of your position. Reach out to friends, family members, former co-workers or teachers. They not only can provide you with a solid emotional support system during this difficult time; they can also serve as networking connections to point you in the right direction to find a new job.

Having steady employment is not the only way to build your resume. Volunteering is a great contribution to give back to your community and can supplement your experience and leadership opportunities. When a new career path arises, you can stand out as a very useful candidate.

When it comes to supplementing some source of income, don't be proud! That is a huge obstacle that the unemployed place before themselves, particularly if they are educated with a particular career background.

So do what you have to do (short of anything illegal, of course). My husband frequently donates plasma, which earns us a little extra cash while also helping to save lives. De-cluttering your home and selling things online or at a yard sale can be beneficial--plus it creates some extra space.

Don't forget about employment agencies. They can put you into contact with businesses that are in need of your set of skills, or they can put you in touch with companies that need someone to fill temporary jobs.

This is a tough time, to be sure. But it doesn't have to wreck your perception of yourself or your future plans. Try to focus on making progress each day. You will be living the high life again before you know it.
