It essentially converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. As soon as the car accelerates again the battery directs the temporarily stored energy back into the vehicle.

Start-stop systems actually turn the engine off when the car is at rest. The system will then quietly, conveniently, and quickly turn the engine back on when the clutch pedal is depressed. This drastically reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

A dual-clutch transmission combines the convenience of a torque converter transmission with the dynamics and efficiency of a manual transmission. This allows it to change gears within a few hundredths of a second without any perceptible interruption of pulling power.

This kind of gearbox brings a significant fuel saving as, in the automatic mode, the control function which performs gearshifts swiftly, times them for optimised fuel consumption.

The efficiency program

A key efficiency feature in luxury vehicles is the on-board computer with an efficiency program which is linked to the driver information system. This system displays data relevant to fuel consumption and gives recommendations for more efficient driving.

The gear-change indicator signals to the driver when he or she should change gears and another function provides information on which on-board consumers, such as the climate control system, are active and how much fuel they are consuming.
