. If this is your first time to do Pilates, you have to learn some basic facts and basic Pilates movements to help you start with your fitness program.

1. Pilates is a cross of yoga, stretching and aerobics. It helps enhances body alignment; strengthens the abs and back while stabilizing the muscles; and helps relaxing the mind and body.

2. Pilates workouts are modifiable so even pregnant women can do Pilates.

3. Pilates follow certain principles related to breathing, centering, concentration, fluidity, integration, control, precision, and mind over matter process.


4. The Construction Rest or the start position is a basic Pilates movement. It is done by lying on the back with both hands on each side and bend the knees with both legs and feet parallel to each other. Using the abs, the lower spine is pressed onto the floor.

5. The right way to execute the Construction Rest movement is by breathing out while pressing the spine onto the floor; inhaling again to release it. Then exhaling and pulling the lower spine up to create a small arch on the lower back; and finally inhaling again to release it.

6. The Head Nod is another basic Pilates movement that begins with the constructive rest position.

7. The head Nod is done by pointing the chin down to the chest while the head is rested on the mat and breathing in. And then returning to the relaxed position by breathing out. And finally inhaling again and slightly tipping head back; exhaling to return to the basic position.

8. The Arms Over is also a basic Pilates movement that increases the range motions in the shoulders. This can be done by first doing the basic position, breathing in as the arms and hands are raised with open palms as if reaching the ceiling with the fingertips; exhaling and bringing the arms down towards the floor behind the head or the body. And then breathing in and raising the arms again; and breathing out to go back to the basic position.

Finally, any person who is planning to begin Pilates must make sure that he or she is healthy enough to perform the movements for Pilates for beginners. So the health will not be jeopardized, beginners who have had medical conditions or who are under medications must secure consent from their doctors.
