One tablespoon of bleach run in an empty dishwasher's full cycle will clean it up just like that. Discoloured dishwashers become new again with Tang. Half a cup of Tang to a regular hot cycle peels of scale and stains because of the citric acid.

The easiest way to keep the dishwasher cleaner is to be preventive. Make sure your water is already hot when you start the cycle. Don't wash containers with paper labels to avoid clogging up your drains. And if something drops or breaks, clear it out right away. It's just a little thing but it can help you spend less time on maintenance in the long run.
