Electrical Tagging Nsw: Safety Starts In Households
Theres not much statistics on the cost of direct damage from fire incidents in Australia
. The paper entitled The Cost of Fire in Australia co-authored by Brian Ashe estimates that the losses amount to AUD$8,500 million each year, which represents about 1.15% of the Gross Domestic Product. In simpler terms, that is equivalent to around AUD$420 for each citizen. To its credit, the Australian Government is investing in fire-fighting and prevention measures including the crafting of laws on electrical test tags.
Local household statistics
A survey conducted in 2007 on households in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory was very revealing. The study showed that nearly half of home fires begin in the kitchen, particularly during the winter season. At least most household owners have realized the importance of installing circuit breakers as a safety precaution. In New South Wales, about 76% of those surveyed said they have electrical safety switches installed in their homes. Another precaution was to install smoke alarms and detectors. Nine in 10 households in NSW have such devices. Dont forget, however, that these are also required to undergo electrical test and tagging.
Like clockwork
The high percentage of people with smoke alarms installed in their homes can be explained by the regulations imposed on the building code. In NSW, you cant build a new home now without a smoke alarm, fire extinguisher or emergency exit plan. But most still dont know that they are also required to submit the electrical wiring of their house for checking by a license electrician at regular intervals. To date, only Queensland imposes electrical testing and tagging schedules and penalties covering electricians, employers, building contractors and household owners.
Outsourcing test and tag requirements
The licensed contractors take extra care to check the electrical appliances, which could also include leaking gas tubes, placed in the kitchen. Rodents and ants will sometimes eat the rubber insulators thereby exposing the wires. If these wires touch wet surfaces, it could be very dangerous for your family. The advantage of hiring authorised test and tag contractors is that they are always update themselves of the regulations and legislations involving electrical safety. The equipment they use is very accurate which can only augur well for your safety. Lastly, the reports they give you will serve as your supporting evidence when you need to claim insurance coverage in case of untoward incidents.
