Electricity and the Impact on Home Costs
Electricity is one of the biggest expenses that homeowners have to contend with when they first purchase and live in a house. However, even if you don't live in a house, the electrical expenses can be pretty steep. A lot of this has to do with what sorts of electrical items you are using, how many you are using and the geographical location of your home.
There are various ways to cut down on electrical costs and expenses. For starters, when you are at home during the summer months, keep your air conditioning on one set temperature such as 75 degrees. Also, make sure that you set your thermostat to operate on auto'. By doing this, your air conditioning will only operate when it detects a rise in temperature versus simply running all of the time.
For other tips on keeping electrical expenses low, invest a little money into purchasing energy efficient light bulbs to use around your home versus regular light bulbs. The difference is that the energy efficient light bulbs should last you significantly longer, thus reducing your need to change them. Also, energy efficient bulbs typically use up less wattage than regular bulbs while giving off just as much (if not more) light.
Other things that you can do include basic things that most of us don't even stop to think about such as turning lights off in rooms when you're not in them. My boyfriend used to be notorious for leaving lights on wherever he went. However, after we received our first really high electrical bill one month after living together, he quickly made the effort to change his ways and turn of the lights when he was not in a room. Something as simple as this can save you hundreds of dollars each year!
This isn't to say that you should live in total darkness or feel as if you can't do anything in your home once nighttime hits; it's just a friendly reminder to help keep yourself in check so that you're not wasting energy. Start by going through your day in your head. Are there things that you currently do that use up a lot of electricity? Things that you can cut down on?
