Electronic Cigarette – A Passive Smoking View
On a holiday abroad recently I was reminded of an experience that although used to be commonplace
, now seemed alien and unwelcome. Inhaling someone else's cigarette smoke in a pub or a bar was once simply a consequence and a price one had to pay to enjoy the benefits and social interaction of the relevant establishment.
When the ban on smoking in public places swept across large parts of the world in recent years, there was much rejoicing in the non smoking communities around the globe as the cleaner, fresher air was embraced and wallowed in.
Back to the recent holiday, and as I inhaled the strong, potent smoke from several tables away and as my throat became irritated, not only did I embrace the smoking ban back home with renewed vigour but my mind turned once more to the (mostly untapped) potential of the electronic cigarette.
In the hot and humid air of my idyllic island retreat, with my wife urging me to relax and completely switch off from work, my mind stirred and became passionate and vaguely political.
The morning after with glorious views over the sparkling, azure sea and volcanic peaks beyond, I sat on my pristinely painted and decorated balcony, notepad in hand, consumed with the theme of electronic cigarettes! How bizarre!
For those of you that have not read any of my articles on the subject before, I am a non smoker, and always have been but with a bona fide interest in the electronic cigarette. I lost my father, also a non smoker, to passive smoking related lung cancer and have been enthusiastic ever since about an individual's right to breathe the cleanest and clearest air possible, whilst also maintaining the belief that each person should retain the right to choose what they do with their own portion of space (and air).
What does all this have to do with the electronic cigarette? Well, the e cigarette in its simplest sense is a nicotine delivery device with one main and crucial difference it does not contain any tobacco! It is the tobacco and it's multitude of toxins that make regular cigarettes so dangerous to both the smoker and those around them.
In a meeting recently, one of the attendees "smoked" or "vaped" an
electronic cigarette for practically all its duration, and aside from a visual curiosity factor, I could barely tell the individual was using the device at all. Essentially odourless with puffs of water vapour (smoke like in appearance), it was amazing!
Allow me to re-emphasise, no tobacco was being used at all!
