Electronic Cigarette Users Slang
Those new to e-smoking already have plenty to learn when it comes to purchasing devices and parts
, and even about how this smoking alternative works in general. As with anything, electronic cigarettes have developed their own subculture of people who talk in what can seem like a foreign language to the uninitiated.
Some of the terminology is based on standard or even scientific terms. Propylene glycol, a common base in electronic cigarette liquids that provides for the way e-cig vapor feels like a traditional cigarette when it hits the back of the throat, is abbreviated to PG. These sorts of terminology uses are easy to pick up for the new e-smoker.
Other terms, though, are slang that has developed within the e-smoking community. If you are planning on joining this community by switching to electronic cigarettes as a smoking alternative, you will find it easier to understand and communicate with your fellow e-cig users if you know the lingo.
What to call traditional cigarettes
One of the earliest terms used by the e-cig community to refer to traditional cigarettes was, "analogs". While this term is certainly still in use by some, it is falling out of favor.
Initially, e-cigs were called "digital cigarettes" by many, so the term analog was adopted because it meant, to some, "not digital". Of course, those in-the-know about technology understand that analog devices still use electricity, and that digital versus analog is a distinction between function. Purists, then, are quick to point out that using analog to describe something like a cigarette simply because it is not digital is technically incorrect.
In response to this, a number of e-cig users have developed the less technical and more descriptive term, "stinkies". Since traditional cigarettes have a foul odor and tend to stink up the homes, cars, hair and clothing of those who use them, many feel this term is much more appropriate.
Is it e-smoking or vaping?
For most in the community, vaping is the preferred term. E-smoking implies that there is smoke involved, and of course that is not what you are inhaling when you use an electronic cigarette.
The majority of the vaping community switched to e-cigs because they, for a variety of reasons, wanted to distance themselves from smoking. For that reason, many find terms that include "smoke" or "cigarette" distasteful.
But is not it still called an electronic cigarette?
To a lot of vapers, yes, electronic cigarette, e-cigarette and e-cig are all still accepted terms, but that is mainly because a better term has yet to be discovered. The "what to call them" discussion rages on in the vaping community as e-cig users search for a more appropriate word.
Some have taken to calling their electronic cigarettes "personal vaporizers", which makes the distinction from traditional cigarettes and is technically correct, but others feel the use of the word personal is redundant, while still others are concerned that this particular term implies connections to drug culture, which vapers are very quick to distance themselves from.
Whatever the devices are called, they are certainly growing in usage. They are less expensive than their combustible counterparts, smell better and do not contain the same social stigma. Whether it is called a personal vaporizer or an electronic cigarette, it is an increasingly popular alternative to analog/stinkies.
