How Harmful Are Personal Care Products To Our Health

We all use personal care products to enhance our beauty or make our skin soft and glow

. Every morning or even evening after taking a shower we reach out for our best lotion, jelly or hair conditioner and apply to our body to make us look better and have an appealing effect. But what we never ask ourselves is what is used to make these care products. Many of us have never even bothered to read the manufacturers list of ingredients used and yet they are indicated on the bottle that contains the products. Anything that you apply on the skin, eat or inhale has some chemicals used in it. The soap we use for personal hygiene is made of chemicals; the inhaler we use is made of chemicals and even the shampoo we use to wash our hair.

Many researches all over the world have shown that there are thousands of chemicals that are used every day on personal care products during preparations. The chemicals that top the list that could be harmful to your body include; lead which is well known to be poisonous to our body. It has side effects like stunted growth, miscarriage for women or even behavioral effect on humans. Sodium Hydroxide is another commonly used chemical in the manufacture of cosmetics products in India. Its effects include scarring and damage to the respiratory tract and other effects on eyes, skin, nose and throat. For personal hygiene purposes we use shampoos and soaps for cleanliness, but these cosmetics sometimes contain Propylene Glycol which may cause irritation of skin, mouth, nose, eyes and other parts of the body. Aluminum is also commonly found on deodorants and antiperspirants and may cause breast cancer if used over a long period of time. In nail polish, glue, hair gels and other hair straightening products, you are likely to find Formaldehyde in them. When inhaled, this chemical can bring about respiratory problems such as asthma.

Whereas there are many cosmetics products in India that are used for grooming, personal hygiene or just a pleasant scent, its advisable that you always read the labels of the personal care product and read the precautions indicated. Some products are meant only for outdoor use and when inhaled or it comes into contact with the eyes, there some first aid procedures to be administered. Though many manufacturers try to assure us that the products are safe, we must also take care while using them. Preferably use natural cosmetic products over chemicals.
