Shakira is a 33 year old Colombia-based singer, composer and songwriter. A petite blonde girl, Shakira first arrived in the music scene of Latin America in the early 1990s.

Shakira was born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia. Shakira began to do live performance during her school days. She had a great vocal ability with rock and roll and mixed it beautifully with the art of belly dancing.

After her first two albums flopped in Colombia, Shakira made a decision to produce her own brand of music. It was the year 1995 when she released Pies Descalzos. The album turned out to a smash hit and it catapulted her into a star in Latin America and Spain.

Her next musical venture Dnde Estn los Lardoons which was released in 1998 was raved up by critics. The album made Shakira a toast of the eyes of people of semi-Hispanophone countries and also many non-Spanish-speaking countries including United States.

Shakira made her debut with English songs in 2001. Her video "Whenever, Wherever" was extremely liked by people from across the world. In 2005, Shakira released two more album projects called Fijacin Oral Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation Vol. 2. The albums turned out to be box office with one of the songs from the album, "Hips Don't Lie" topping international selling. The song is still regarded as one of the best selling song in the world.

Shakira has won two Grammy Awards, seven Latin Grammy Awards, and twelve Billboard Latin Music Awards apart from being nominated for Golden Globes once. She also holds the record of being the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time. Shakira is also regarded as the second most successful female Latin singer after Gloria Estefan with the selling of over 50 million albums worldwide.

Shakira recently composed "Waka Waka" that went on to become the official songs for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The song became an overnight worldwide smash hit. Till date, more than 2 million copies of the song has been sold worldwide earning it the distinction of being the biggest selling World Cup song of all time.
