Eliminate Moths From Your Home

Moth infestations have been noticeably rising over recent years

. An increase in climate temperature, the use of central heating and a preference for natural fibres are contributing factors. Moth control requires a combination of regular household cleaning routine together with the use of effective deterrents.

As we head into the warmest moths of the year, moth activity will increase. The humidity has been significantly higher than usual over the last quarter due to the unseasonably heavy rainfall and the much discussed jet stream effect.

For moths this has resulted ideal feeding conditions for the larvae. They do not actually drink, but absorb moisture through their feeding source - often clothing and carpets. Left untreated, these larvae will cause considerable damage.

Here is the recommended regime to control a moth infestation:

1 Thorough Cleaning

Keeping your home and clothing clean and tidy is key to upholding a moth-free environment.

2 - Prevention - Better than Cure

If you are concerned about the control of moths, have woollen carpets or a selection of wool and cashmere clothing, moth deterrents should be considered. Use scented products around the home and in drawers, wardrobes and cupboards to deter moths. Scented sachets, drawer liners, hanging units and sprays will all help considerably.

3 - Monitor the Situation

Watch out for particular signs of moth damage such as adult moth activity. The best way to monitor is by using pheromone traps.

4 Take Fast Action

There are several fast acting killing products on the market that will be effective on eggs, larvae and adult moths, immediately acting on the source of the problem.

5 Maintenance Regime

If you have had moth concerns in the past, or are keen to prevent future problems, you should be using moth deterrent products to protect your carpets, clothing and food from moth damage. Maintain your cleaning routines - in particular, check around furniture and vacuum thoroughly, under chairs and sofas and along skirting boards; also check your stored winter clothing, particularly your best and most valued coats and knitwear - dry cleaning and/or freezing will help, and then return to storage with moth deterrents.

Ensure you keep moth deterrents current, especially moth traps and wardrobe or drawer protection.

And finally, remain vigilant! Adult moths usually fly at night time while you sleep, so being aware of the telling signs is critical - look out for the larvae which are similar to small grains of rice. Check dried foods for evidence of Food Moths and use pantry moth traps if you have problems in the kitchen.

Follow these steps and you should be able to enjoy moth-free living.
