Elton John Tickets - John Says New Comedy Touches On His Life In The Closet

Elton John has done it all, from music to theater and a heck of a lot of charity work

, and he's done it all pretty loudly. The pop pianist is known best for being a glittering beacon of pop-rock on the stage, capturing eyes with his outrageous fashion sense. Lady Gaga is certainly shocking listeners across the country, but she's never dressed up in a giant Donald Duck suit, or worn stilt-sized boots during a pinball tournament.

But all this is drawn from what we know about Elton John today. There was a time when he was still fashionably bold, but kept his personal life-and most importantly, his sexuality-in the dark. The changed, of course, after a landmark interview with Rolling Stone in which he was approached about rumors of being attracted to men. John admitted at the time that he was bisexual; he said later on that he felt this would be more acceptable to the mainstream than coming out as fully gay. In due time, he did finally admit to being homosexual.

Elton John's arduous coming-out process is depicted, to some degree, in a new dramedy that he's working on with his filmmaker husband David Furnish. The production Next Fall, which is coming to Broadway this year and is finally supported by John, is about a gay couple struggling to find balance between living openly and reconciling their sexuality with their traditional faith.

During an interview on The View recently, John admitted that the play (which, it should be noted, he had no hand in writing) captures the fear and inner turmoil that he wrestled with before coming out. The play is about a gay couple with different faiths: Adam, one of the main characters, is an atheist, while the other, Luke, had a strict, fundamentalist upbringing. Despite a genuine love for one another, the differences in their faiths become a sore point that stresses their relationship. Adam continually questions how Luke can live a gay lifestyle and still hold on to the Christian guilt that's haunted him throughout childhood. Luke, on the other hand, isn't willing to drop the faith that is such a large part of who he is.

While on The View, John admitted that the play captured the struggle he went through rather well. "I came out...at the height of my career and, yeah, it maybe hurt me a little bit, but not that much, and it gave me the freedom to be who I was for the rest of my life and I didn't have to live my life in secret," he said. "I didn't have the courage in my convictions and I think as soon as I did that - when I was asked a simple question in a magazine and I said 'yes' - my life transformed itself."

Next Fall is receiving rave reviews as a chamber drama that poignantly captures the dark, personal struggle that went on behind John's glittering, on-stage facade. After seeing the show, get some Elton John tickets and see the artist unburdened.
