Embracing Wrinkles in Time

Copyright (c) 2010 Karin MarcusSunday morning, I awoke to the sun reflecting off the first frost; its tentacles gracefully lining the newly bared branches and dusting the carpet of leaves on the ground. It was the final day of a women's retreat I was co-leading in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Our focus for the weekend had been The Joy of Letting Go, and this clean crisp morning seemed to say it was time to move on.That afternoon, I returned home to the suburbs of Philadelphia and was surprised to see an abundance of radiant leaves still on the trees and could once again enjoy watching the autumn breeze gently choreographing their individual dances to the earth. It was a strange feeling, as if the clock had been rewound. It had been one hour for daylight savings, but this was more like an instant two week rewind. I felt that I had experienced my own little wrinkle in time. When sharing this experience with a friend, she told me that she too was in the midst of a similar experience and there was fitting geological term for it. An unconformity is "a stratum of amnesia in the geological record, where overlying rock is significantly younger than what lies below. (It) represents some break in an otherwise continuous story of formation."* My friend even wrote a poem about it.UnconformityBetween end and beginningTime breaks.Unrecorded, bitterness evaporates; enmities recede.Even rock forgets.by Mary ScherfThere are moments in our life when we have the opportunity to make a deep emotional shift in the stratum of our reality and rewrite our story. Such opportunities can be of monumental importance. My particular wrinkle in time allowed me to stop and fully experience the wisdom of nature's autumn. I was reminded of four illuminating principals:First, the brilliant colors of fall are alerting us that the need for change is here. Reminding us that from the heartfelt desire to change, comes the power to change.Second, we need to acknowledge that our old story is holding us back. It is full of limited beliefs whose time is done and are only weighing us down. With humility and courage, we must let them go. Knowing that like the autumn leaves, they will not crash and burn but will gently drift away.Third, with trust and faith, we must give time for the new story to unfold. We are not cutting down the tree. Our roots and values remain to ground us; our core strengths form the trunk which still stands tall, and our branches enable us to still reach out and take on new growth.Fourth, once the debris of the old story has settled to the ground, new vistas will appear that were once hidden and new verdant beginnings will emerge at the appropriate time.My little wrinkle in time was a special gift of opportunity. And when life gives you a second chance, embrace it with joy!*From Uncommon Ground: Language for an American Landscape, Barry Lopez, editor
