Employee Engagement - Investment For The Future

Employee engagement is a business management concept that has gained significant attention over the last few years

. It is focused on whether employees at any given organization are enthusiastic about their work, interested in their jobs and dedicated to making a difference. Apathy and negativity are among the largest morale crushers in the workplace and it is contagious. Once it gets a foothold, it spreads rapidly, until it becomes an epidemic. It is often difficult to keep outlooks positive under the best circumstances, but when staff is being cut and demands on employees are increased it is almost impossible. Many organizations are struggling to keep their employees engaged.

They are finding that their service levels are dropping and customer satisfaction is at an all time low. There are several drivers to employee engagement, which is often defined as an emotional connection that employees have for their company. This often leads them to exert more effort to their duties. The issues that cause employee disengagement vary from one company to another. Average age and size of the organization are key factors. Smaller companies seem to have a closer, more personal relationship than larger companies. Younger employees enjoy a challenging work environment with opportunities for advancement. Mature, long-term employees often value recognition for their contributions.

Though the factors vary, one of the most important drivers is the relationship employees have with their direct manager. Those who feel valued and have an honest, trusting relationship with their manager have higher levels of employee engagement. When their manager becomes disenchanted it can affect the entire team. Leading by example, keeping an open line of communication and listening to the issues can go a long way to keeping morale high. Organizations are beginning to institute training programs focused on providing a supportive environment for their employees. Ignoring top talent can result in evaporation of loyalty.

A stable chain of command and a company that has integrity also have somewhat higher levels of employee engagement. Organizations that fail to take positive action will most likely continue to see increases in turnover and negative energy and decreases in service levels. Those that truly understand the link between their employees and productivity levels view their workforce as an investment in the future. This behavior, when practiced throughout each level of management can reap the benefits of a workforce focused on the success of the business. Trust, recognition and appreciation are returned and energy levels increase.
