Employment – Turning Your Weakness Into Strengths

Employment Turning Your Weakness Into Strengths

One of the most difficult questions for most people to answer during an interview has to do with what their professional weaknesses are. It is a difficult question to answer honestly since you have to tell the interviewer that there is something that you're not good at. The way to answer this question effectively and honestly is to turn your weakness into a strength. There is one way to do this that is frequently used but should be avoided.

Many people believe that by electing to tell the employer about a weakness that makes them sound good they can avoid having to answer the question honestly. Answers such as "I'm a perfectionist" and "I'm a workaholic" try to imply that their weakness makes them appear to be a good candidate for the job. However, these kinds of answers frequently come across as arrogant and you're really not providing an answer to the question at all.

The purpose of this question is to inform the interviewer that you are self aware and that you know and understand your limitations, and that you can minimize the negative effects of your weaknesses.

In order to turn your weakness into a strength you first have to admit that you have a genuine weakness. You have to be able to demonstrate that you're trying to either overcome that weakness, or at least improving that area of your performance.

For instance, suppose that your greatest weakness is that your organizational skills aren't the very best. This may at first seem like a very big problem. However, it's possible to turn that around and make it sound positive. One way to do this is to say that organization is not something that you are naturally good at, and as a result you making an extra effort to stay well organized.

Another way of answering this question is to do so in terms of the job that you are interviewing for. If you don't have an important skill that is job relevant, follow this up by explaining that you are committed to quickly obtaining that skill. This is a sound strategy, especially for young job seekers who are looking for their first position.

It is important that you admit your weaknesses and follow that up with your plans to overcoming it. The interviewer will be impressed with your honesty, and by the fact that you have the self motivation and dedication required to improve your work habits.
