When there is an inflammation in the heart muscles, the condition refers to a condition known as inflammatory heart disease. It may be due to different factors but most doctors say that it may be due to virus, bacteria or other internal reasons.

Inflammatory heart disease is classified into three conditions; namely pericarditis, myocarditis and endocarditis. As for endocarditis, it is induced by an infection in the inner lining of the heart or the endocardium. It becomes inflammed.

This condition presents itself when pathogens coming from other areas of the body infects the bloodstream and affixes themselves in the heart's defective areas. If you will ignore this and not treat it right away, the condition may cause partial to complete damage to the heart valve. It may even become a life-threatening condition. The people who are usually affected by this condition are those who have an artificial heart valve or those who have suffered from a degeneration of the heart valve. If you have pre-existing heart defects, it also increases the likelihood of developing this condition.

Symptoms for this condition may take a very long time to manifest themselves. As the heart succumbs to more damage and defect due to the infection, the condition progresses and worsens. Below are symptoms you need to be wary of:

- Muscular/joint pains;

- Sudden/unexplained weight loss;

- Chills/fever;

- Red or purple spots in the mouth, sin or on the whites of eyes;

- Blood in urine;

- Heart murmurs;

- Constant coughing;

- Unusual tiredness/fatigue;

- Swelling of the abdomen & feet/oedema;

- Night sweats;

- Pale complexion;

- Tenderness below the rib cage which is associated with the spleen;

- Shortness of breath/difficulty in breathing; and

- Red tender spots below the skin of the fingers.

There may be other non-threatening conditions that are similar to the above-mentioned symptoms so it is still very important to see a medical practitioner regarding these. The moment you see or feel a few of these symptoms, go to your doctor right away.

People who are at risk with this type of inflammatory heart disease are those with artificial valves, those with congenital birth defects, those who had a previous heart injury and intravenous drug users. Tests done to determine if you have this condition include blood tests, echocardiogram, ECG and MRI scan.

For treatment, doctors will prescribe antibiotics. However, for intense cases, surgery may become an option.
