The Environmental Goods and Services (EGS) sector is attracting substantial investment attention and in terms of venture capital is the 3rd largest sector being funded at this time. The current global market and future market projections both point to ample opportunities for suitably skilled individuals. In November 2010 Forfs released a study named the Future Skills Needs of Enterprise within the Green Economy. Forfs is a policy advisory board for science and enterprise development in Ireland. The 'Green Economy' study identifies how green economy will affect the future skills needs of related enterprises. The study also puts forward a variety of recommended stimuli for such enterprises to drive business and hence employment growth.

The overarching vision set by the Steering Group for the Sector is: "For Ireland to be the benchmark 'smart green' economy for population centres under 20 million by 2015 - and to have the skills base and talent to drive innovative and high value products and services and maximise future business and employment growth potential".

The report includes lists of relevant skills that will be required in the various energy subsectors and also provides an estimated occupational profile which shows a marked increase in the needs for scientists, engineers, operatives and skilled personnel. This is not just an Irish trend or one limited to Western Europe. In 2010 the global market for environmental good and services EGS was estimated at 1,100 billion and according to a recent study commissioned by the German Environment Ministry this is estimated to rise to 1,900 billion by 2020.
