Ideally, the temperature of the refrigerator should not exceed the 40 F mark because if it does, it may result to your refrigerator consuming more energy than it should. For you to be able to easily manage your refrigerators temperature, buy a refrigerator thermometer and set it right in the door.

Moreover, the refrigerator door is usually the one that is exposed to outside heat, making it the part that takes longer to cool. While it is intended to carry liquid stuffs like water, juice, milk, or even butter, it is not advisable to store the latter items in the door. Again, the refrigerator door does not cool easily and the same way goes with liquid. Therefore, if you place them there, it would take more time and energy in the refrigerators part to cool them.

In the same manner, avoid storing food that frees moisture in the refrigerator. The reason is that getting rid of moisture can cause the refrigerator to consume extra energy. In addition, make sure you allow warm food to cool down first before placing them inside as it can also result to more energy consumption.

Air intake vents located below the refrigerator can be clogged with dirt. The same way goes with the exhaust. This accumulation of dirt can result to a poor cooling performance, resulting to the refrigerator again to use up extra energy. Check the said areas regularly to get rid of dust accumulation. A wet cloth is enough to free the vent from dust and allow it to work properly again.

As a final point, extend the life of your refrigerator by letting a technician check it for damages and leaks. Even the slightest of damage can affect the performance of the appliance so have it checked once every two years. If you follow these tips religiously, you will save both the environment and your wallet.
