Energy Flow,process Of Energy Flow

energy flow

energy flow

All organisms need energy to carry out essential functions such as growth, movement, maintenance and repair, and help in reproduction. In the ecosystem the energy flows from sun to autotrophs, and later transferred to organisms which feed on autotrophs and become prey for tertiary consumers.

It is observed that the amount of energy received and transferred in a ecosystem from organism to organism modulates the ecosystem structure.

Process of Energy Flow

It is observed that when one organism eats other the molecules are metabolized and the energy is transferred. Due to this energy is flown from producers to consumers and the organisms are grouped in an ecosystem based on the source of energy.

The capture of radiant energy, its transformation into chemical energy by producers via photosynthesis, and its translocation through all biological systems via consumers and decomposers. All organisms are considered as potential sources of energy.

As trophic level of the organism increases the position and its sequence of energy transfer also modifies.

The green plants in the ecosystem-terminology are called producers. In a terrestrial ecosystem, major producers are herbaceous and woody plants. Likewise, primary producers in an aquatic ecosystem are various species like phytoplankton, algae and higher plants.

Energy Flow in Ecosystem

All animals depend on plants (directly or indirectly) for their food needs. They are hence called consumers and also heterotrophs. If they feed on the producers, the plants, they are called primary consumers, and if the animals eat other animals which in turn eat the plants (or their produce) they are called secondary consumers.

The primary consumers will be herbivores. Some common herbivores are insects, birds and mammals in terrestrial ecosystem and molluscs in aquatic ecosystem.

Organisms occupy a place in the natural surroundings or in a community according to their feeding relationship with other organisms. Based on the source of their nutrition or food, organisms occupy a specific place in the food chain that is known as their trophic level. Producers belong to the first trophic level, herbivores (primary consumer) to the second and carnivores (secondary consumer) to the third.
