Energy labels explained
Energy labels are a useful indicator of how energy efficient a product is. Comparing the labels found on products can help consumers save both energy - and by extension, money on their bills. The labels can be found on a wide range of products from washing machines to light bulbs and even houses now need energy performance certificates.
There are a range of energy labels on the market and it can be difficult to understand what each one means. The most recognised label is the European Energy Label, which tells you how efficiently a product uses energy. Products are usually rated from G (worst) to A (best). Presently, the scale also includes extra A+ and A++ ratings for fridges and freezers and it is likely that in the future other products will also be rated this way. Consumers will find European Energy Labels on fridges and freezers, washing machines, tumble dryers and washer dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, light bulbs and on electric ovens.
Some products may have an Energy Saving Trust Recommended sticker. The Energy Saving Trust Recommended scheme is voluntary and is used to show that a product is very energy efficient, usually among the top 20 per cent of most efficient products available. This sticker can be found on a wide range of products which include appliances such as washing machines and fridges, light fittings, insulation, glazing and televisions to name a few.
Products that are less harmful to the environment than other similar products will have a European Ecolabel and IT equipment that is energy efficient and made with fewer harmful chemicals can have a TCO label. The label could indicate that the product has good picture quality, low noise levels, or low electrical and magnetic fields.
The European Energy Star scheme is a voluntary scheme which applies when office equipment has reached energy efficiency standards as set by the EU. These are based upon the energy consumption recored when the equipment is being used and when it is in standby mode; the distinctive logo can be found on computers, monitors, fax machines and printers.
