Warrington had fought their way back to 30-30 going into the final quarter but Leeds's substitute hooker Paul McShane spotted an opportunity and McGuire made a 40- metre finish look deceptively simple.

Leeds was missing seven first choice players and will take this compelling victory as evidence that their hopes of a fourth consecutive Super League title remain alive.

The game started well for the Wolves, who were as impressive as they were industrious on their way to a 20-12 half-time lead.

Greg Eastwood kept Leeds in it but when King grabbed his second, the visitors looked doomed. Instead, Danny Buderus and Ryan Hall sandwiched Chris Riley's effort, before McGuire's try and Kevin Sinfield's 45-metre drop goal wrapped things up.

Leeds assistant coach Francis Cummins said: 'It was end to end and I'm sure the fans enjoyed it, but it didn't reflect our game plan.'

He said: 'We're disappointed but we'll toughen up. We have to get better in some of these games or you become the almost-there mob.'

Matt King had given the hosts the perfect start, blasting on to Ben Westwood's pass and charging over Carl Ablett to set the tone.

Keith Senior replied in equally impressive terms, romping past Ryan Atkins, Richie Mathers and Lee Briers on a 60-metre dash, but Warrington remained more threatening
