The English Toy Spaniel has a long heavy coat. There is feathering on their ears, and on both front and hind legs. Their fur is shiny and silky that may be straight, or a little hint of wave. The English Toy Spaniel is an average shedder.
Activity
The English Toy Spaniel needs to be walked daily. While playing can be a good form of exercise, this does not fulfill their instinct to walk. Dogs that are not taken for daily walks have greater possibility to demonstrate a wide array of behavioral problems. They appreciate a good run in a securely fenced area off-leash.
Temperament
The English Toy Spaniel is affectionate, obedient, and very eager to please. They are affectionate and patient towards their owners. Happy and content, with the willingness to sit anywhere with their masters, they do not require that much activity level. They are generally friendly to everybody, with high learning skills. They get along pretty well with children and pets, provided they do not play too rough.

The English Toy Spaniel are recognized throughout Scottish and English history as excellent companions and hot water bottles, they were used as little gun dogs. These are the ultimate lap dogs, with the content feeling of sitting by their owners' side and/or lap.
Care
English Toy Spaniels are easy to groom for a long-haired dog. They only need regular brushing to prevent mats from forming and tangles. Brushing and/or combing should be done once a week. Bathing should be done with mild shampoo once or twice a month. Ears should always be checked for ear infections.
Training
The English Toy Spaniels are intelligent and eager to please. Due to the fact that they tend to be willful, it is imperative to establish your authority over them as early as possible, or before training starts.
Known to be timid around strangers, socialization should be done as early as possible to avoid being fearful of visitors. Crate training is effective for housetraining this breed as. Because of their size, they can find a lot of places to go urinate without being noticed, and once it starts to be a habit, it will be difficult to break. Some owners choose to paper train them so that they do not need to go outside. They are also known to be hard to leash train; therefore it is important to start early. Known to be a hunter, they tend to chase after birds, so it is important that they will never be left off-leash especially when untrained.
Character
The English Toy Spaniel is the smallest among the spaniel breeds. Two most distinctive features of this breed are their domed head and short nose. A squarely-built, sturdy and compact, they exhibit a dignified exterior.
