The most recognized landmark in New Orleans, St. Louis Cathedral is the centerpiece of Jackson Square. It was first built in 1718, and is the oldest continuously operating cathedral in the U. S. In 1987, Pope John Paul II visited this cathedral, which also holds the bones of eight New Orleans bishops. Adorned above are the flags of countries that once ruled New Orleans. The life of St. Louis is depicted on the lower windows on both sides of the church. The cathedral is surreal because of its immense beauty.
