Enjoy Good Vision For Life With Sensible Eye Care
Besides speaking, we can communicate to one another through our eyes
. The eyes are truly the mirror to our souls, as it is fairly easy to determine what a person is thinking by simply looking into their eyes. Our eyes provide us with a direct connection to the world around us and most people consider their sight to be the most important of the five senses.
In order to ensure that we will have good vision throughout our lives, it is necessary that we follow some basic eye care practices. Many eye problems can be prevented or corrected if detected early on, so it is recommended to receive regular eye examinations by a licensed ophthalmologist at least once every two years.
Just like the skin, our eyes are exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun when we are outdoors. Studies have proven that exposure to bright sunlight increases the risk of developing cataracts and other disorders that we are all prone to as we age. Therefore, it is very important to wear sunglasses when outside on sunny days as they will shield your eyes from damaging UV rays.
With extended exposure to the sun, ultraviolet radiation can damage not only the cornea and retina but the sensitive skin of the eyelids as well. When choosing sunglasses, check the labels to be sure that the glasses block 100 percent of UVB rays and at least 95 percent of UVA rays. Cheap sunglasses should be avoided as they generally do not provide your eyes with adequate protection.
Millions of people across the UK suffer from eye injuries of some kind every year. It is estimated that over ninety percent of these injuries could be prevented if protective eye wear had been worn. It is very important to shield your eyes with protective glasses or goggles when you are working on machinery such as flying debris, fumes, dust and sparks which are all dangerous to the eyes. When handling chemicals, you should work in a well ventilated area and be sure that spray nozzles are pointed away from your face. Many chemicals can in fact permanently destroy the surface of your eyes which could lead to a loss of vision or even blindness.
Good eye care also involves eating a proper, well balanced diet. Foods rich in beta-carotene such as carrots, broccoli and spinach should be incorporated into your diet as should antioxidant-rich foods that contain Vitamin C and E. Eating these foods regularly will not only improve your overall health, but will also lower your risk of developing cataracts and other forms of retinal damage.
If you tend to spend extended amounts of time sitting in front of your computer like many people do, it is a good idea to take frequent breaks because LCD screens are a leading cause of eye irritation. Taking just a ten minute pause every hour or so will help to avoid excessive eye strain, dry eyes, blurred vision and even headaches.
Eyesight is a precious gift that unfortunately, many people tend to take for granted. Defective vision poses many problems which can interfere with our daily activities as well as affecting our personal and working lives. In order to preserve our good vision, we must take care of our eyes in every way possible.
