Ensuring The Home Security Of Your Vacation House

Most people take the home security of their primary residence quite seriously

. They build fences, install home alarm systems, and make sure to shut all of the windows at night. But sometimes it can be easy to get more lax with a vacation home. Often, these secondary residences are purchased later in life, perhaps after youve lived for years without a break in, making you a little overly confident. Moreover, vacation homes tend to be located in nicer areas with lower crime, making you feel more protected, as opposed to your regular house that might be located in a diverse urban area. Or if your vacation house is not located in a beach community, it might be in a remote, rural area, possible in the middle of the woods, where its hard to imagine many would-be burglars might congregate.

But these are the exact reasons that cabins and cottages can be targeted. They are isolated, often contain expensive items like boats or flat screen televisions, and are generally less well protected than urban dwellings. So its important to make sure you take the home security of your vacation house seriously. Here are some tips to follow.

1. Get a good home alarm and make sure to set it.

This is probably one of the first things you did after purchasing your primary house its relatively cheap, and just makes good sense. But you might not have one in your cabin because you figure hey, we are in the middle of the North Carolina woods, whos going to break in here? But not so fast there are plenty of robbers who would be happy to take that antique rifle collection or expensive stereo system off your hands. Just make sure you are setting it every night and especially when you are away for a long period of time.

2. Dont leave the spare key under the mat.

It can be tempting to leave a spare key outside your cottage. You dont want to drive up all the way from Raleigh-Durham to realize that you left the keys at home. But please try to think of a more inventive spot. If you have a neighbor, give it to them. Or maybe after 10 years in the area youve made buddies with the owner of the local grocery store? Choose wisely, of course dont just go handing out spare copies of your key willy-nilly. But seriously, just about anywhere is better than under the front mat!

3. Bring expensive items back home.

Part of the convenience of having a permanent vacation home is not having to haul your stuff back and forth all the time. But certain valuables are not worth leaving behind, especially off-season if youll be away for a few months without returning. Idle boats in winter are prime targets for thieves, for example. So consider finding a way to bring these items back, or at least find a way to securely store them in the area be it in a strong, locked shed (that is by the home alarm system, preferably) or at a local storage facility.
