An environmentally friendly mentality in business was historically considered a mere

gimmick or attempt to find a USP within a particular industry by putting a focus upon green awareness and sustainability. Times have however changed and eco credentials are not something to be sneered at, but in fact an absolutely imperative aim of any company. Whether its for the somewhat scornful purpose of favourable Public Relations, in order to reducecosts associated with wastage, to adhere to increasingly stringent legislation, for legitimately ethical reasons -or most likely a number of these and other aspects: ever increasing numbers of businesses are asserting themselves firmly within the eco friendly camp.Aside from the ethical considerationsof an environmental minded business model, the up-sides of environmental consideration are multitudinous and can have a healthy impact upon a company's profit margins. It has been proven for instance that businesses in the UK wasted 120 million last year as a consequence of leaving lights switched on. In fact, ignorant use of electrical equipment has a serious impact on the overheads (and proportionately their carbon footprint) for many businesses. Leaving a television on stand-by as opposed to switching it off at the wall or fogetting to fully turn off a laptop overnight are amongst a huge number of ways in which energy is wasted and all of these minor incidents can amount to a worryingly high level of energy wastage and inflated overheads.It is suprisingly easy to transform your working environment from a wasteful space into one which makes maximum use of resources and impacts on nature as little as is possible, some simple alterations can make a massive difference. Paper for example is found in numerous forms around the office, and wasted regularly and needlessly, from files to fax paper, this vital material is squandered frequently and more often than not, committed to a standard bin as opposed to one specifically for recycling. Firstly, all offices should invest in recycled paper products across the board, it is rarely more costly than non-recycled paper and is of equivalent quality. In addition, all paper should be re-used where possible for note taking, or as part of a rough work pad made from multiple sheets of unwanted paper- and then when all use has been had, it can be recycled and the cycle begun all over again.Maintaining office temperatures is also a major contributor to energy consumption in the office environment, and even the smallest of adjustments to the thermostat can result in more manageable bills and lower carbon emissions. In winter, simply reducing the heating by one degree or in summer, raising the air conditioning operating temperature by one degree can have little impact on the office environment but a noticeable impact on overheads. There are a great deal of ways in which an organisation can attune themselves better to addressing environmental concerns and in doing so save themselves a fortune: it is all a matter of common sense and sensible practice.
