Enzymatic Degumming for Refining Rice Bran Oil - CSIR - IICT Technology

Enzymatic Degumming Technology for Refining Rice Bran Oil

I have seen this technologyin the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India. I caem to know that "Enzymatic Degumming Technology for Refining Rice Bran Oil" was developed by Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, (IICT), Hyderabad, under the aegis of CSIR, New Delhi.

CSIR IICR enzymatic degumming technology that helped produced high quality rice bran oil. Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) had initiated the rice bran oil project to purify rice bran oil using enzymatic degumming technology. Thistechnology aimed at lowering the residual phosphorous levels to 0 to 5 parts every million.

IICT'S rice bran oil technology is a boon and boose vegetable oil industry. Enzymatic degumming technology has already beentransferred and it is going tobe introduced in manyrefineries andcompanies.

Phosphorus is the main culprit in rice bran oil. Enzymatic degumming very neatly takes away the phosphorus from the oil. Oil quality has improved since changing over from acid degumming with phosphoric acid to enzymatic degumming. In physical refining, the phosphorus content in the oil after pretreatment should be less than 5 ppm, other-wise there is a risk of colour reversion in the deodoriser. Normally 10-15 ppm phosphorus is left in the acid degumming. In the enzymatic degumming, the residual phosphorus is almost zero. Overall oil quality is better with enzymatic degumming than with acid degumming.

Another important factor is that the refining losses. In the enzymatic degumming refining losses are lower than with acid degumming. In the enzymatic degumming, the percentage losses of oil in the gums are about 0.3-0.5% but in acid gumming, it was 1.6%. That benefits manufacturer an amounts of 1% increase in oil yields.

Since the enzyme is a biochemical, oil has been refined without using any inorganic chemicals. All the methods applied are physical methods and no chemicals are used anywhere.
