IMAX 3D cinemas are famous worldwide for their uniqueness and high-quality entertainment. Surprisingly, 3-D films have been in existence since the 1950s, but had been shut out because of huge production costs due to expensive hardware and production processes. 3-D cinemas use digital 3D stereoscopic cinema technology, a special system that records the images as seen from two perspectives which requires special projectors and special glasses to provide the illusion of depth when viewing the film.

Presently, digital acquisition and digital distribution has enabled 3-D cinemas to use sophisticated cinema equipment including digital projection systems. 3-D cinemas have recently become increasingly popular and successful after the release of the movie, Avatar. In 2007, the UK experienced an increase in the number of digital cinemas and became the first European country to run DCI-compliant fully digital multiplex cinemas. Digital cinemas do not use conventional film projectors instead they use digital projectors which offer a consistent image with no degradation over time.

The UK cinema industry has been through a roller coaster ride experiencing good and bad times. With the introduction of National Lottery funding, the UK has produced several hits during the late 90s and 2000s, with films like James Bond, Harry Potter, Slumdog Millionaire and other big hits the UK cinema industry is booming.

The Plaza Cinema is one of the oldest cinemas that first opened in 1939, it offered full programmes and live variety entertainment. In 1997 Plaza reopened as a Community Cinema with a unique concept of holding community events to promote the social, educational and inspirational value of film by offering film based educational programmes to schools, and to the general public.

UGC Cinemas were a leading brand across Europe with 41 cinemas and 391 screens in the UK. However, in December 2004, UGC Cinemas were sold to BlackGroup and Cine-UK which later re-launched UGC Cinemas as Cineworld. Over the years Cineworld has become the UK's second largest multiplex cinema chain. Scott Cinemas Ltd is also a leading UK based cinema chain with locations in 8 cities across the UK.
