One never really knows what the level of English the students will have until they are face to face with them in the classroom. For this reason it is vital to be well prepared and have a back up plan to use if your original lesson plan is not working.
It is a good idea to have some fun activities at the ready if you begin to lose the interest of your students. If the mood of the students is lacking enthusiasm it is important to be able to stimulate their interest and keep them focused.
Make sure you know your subject inside out. Students will lose faith in you if you are unable to answer their questions and you will lose their respect.
Stay in control at all times and do not lose your temper. It is sometimes difficult as you will find there are students who are very challenging.
Do not tolerate bad behaviour and be consistent with your punishments. Find punishments that are productive and appropriate.
Support your students by giving them encouragement and allow them time to soak up what your teaching them. Give them opportunities to use the language and recycle what they have learned.
Spend time finding ways to improve your lessons and gather new ideas to keep yourself inspired. Be on the lookout for new activities to arouse your students interests.
Chat to other teachers about things you find challenging and bounce ideas off them. Observe other teachers whenever possible.
