European Energy Efficiency Rules Us Bound?
The European Union has been one of the most proactive governmental blocks when it
comes to climate change and emissions control and they continue to set the standard for efficiency and progress. They have recently issued new energy efficiency rules that expand the need to display labels on industrial, commercial and household appliances and machines. This is part of a sweeping roster change, aimed at ensuring that energy efficiency is at the top of the commercial agenda going forward.
All new buildings constructed after 2020 will, under energy efficiency rules proposed by the European Parliament, have to be at least in part fueled by renewable energy. As we know that buildings represent a large part of carbon emissions, it is high time that precise action was taken to introduce more stringent energy efficiency rules for new buildings.
Buildings will last for 50 to 100 years and will undoubtedly have a lasting effect on the environment. While we can retrofit and renovate to a certain extent, sustainable efforts need to be placed on how we construct these buildings and the procedures we take during design. All buildings that are made after 2020 under the European Union's energy efficiency rules must now conform.
The European Parliament is convinced that education is paramount when it comes to achieving high energy efficiency standards and as such, labels must now be attached to energy consuming products for industrial or commercial use across the Union. Windows and framework must also be appropriately labeled, so that users can see how much energy they are responsible for and can choose wisely, in advance.
As an individual or as a business owner, with information in hand you can make the best sustainable decisions for the future. Surely, in the world of tomorrow, all appliances and assets must be energy efficient, or they will be responsible for incurring additional costs for you, as a tax or otherwise.
The European Union is well used to carbon taxation, as their Energy Efficiency Scheme focuses on a cap and trade program dating back to 2005. The United States may or may not see such a program, but legislation is under discussion to see whether the world's biggest polluter will follow suit.
Within the boardroom, procedures and systems must be put in place, demanding granular data about energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions. Quite apart from carbon reduction, the concentration on this kind of data gathering will reveal cost savings, which should be a focus of attention for everybody today.
Around the world, governments tend to agree that we must aim for as much as an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as based on 1990 levels, by the time we get to 2050. If not, considerable and detrimental change could be caused to climate and weather patterns. This level of change will, nevertheless, call for consistent and urgent action and implementation of new energy efficiency rules, everywhere.
