European Football – What the transfer market left
Most of the tops teams invested their money very cautiously while they continued to expand the gap between them and the rest
.
Every summer the reconstruction begins, with the season over, each team has the time to meditate and value what went right and wrong, why some decisions worked out and some others did not, how can the roster be improved and whose time is up. Once the conclusions are drawn, the biggest issue is how many of those problems can be solved without compromising the budget of the team. In an economy that is still feeling the effects of the recession, many clubs are trying to escape bankruptcy and have no choice but to put their finances before the success of the team.
Some clubs have proven to be wiser than others managing their money, thanks to their good negotiating skills and judgment to make the right call, in order to make the most from one in a lifetime chances. This is the case of AC Milan, a team that patiently waited until the last week of the transfer market to make their move, taking advantage of the urge to sell that clubs had before the market was closed. This technique is a double-edged weapon that if not manipulated correctly can leave the buyer with empty hands, and the seller without an important revenue.
The maneuver done by AC Milan was by far the best of this summer, as they managed to sign Robinho and Ibrahimovic for less than half their real price, and with the Sweden they were even able to get to a payment arrangement that allows them to start paying for the transfer until next season. Both players were not going to be taken into consideration by their respective coaches. There where teams interested in their services, but couldn't afford the investment, the transfer market was about to close, and AC Milan was skilled enough to disguised themselves as a solution to those problems, rather than as a buyer obsessed with the player.
Another team that did a very good job signing in comparison to their classic rival is Real Madrid, a club that not only significantly reduced their market expenses in regards to last year, but was able to make really good use of the budget. With nearly 80 million Euros they signed five players: Kedhira, Ozil, Carvalho, Di Maria, and Pedro Leon, while Barcelona spent a little bit more than 73 for only three players: Villa, Mascherano and Adriano. Interesting difference huh? And if compared with Manchester City's investment, those 80 million Euros look smaller next to the 145 that the English team spent in six players: Tour, Milner, Silva, Kolarov, Boateng, and Balotelli.
Real Madrid's investment gains merit taking into consideration that Ozil and Di Maria are young talented players whose price will definitely increase as long as they continue to follow that path that they have so far over time. This gives the Spanish team two immediate benefits: the money saved by signing the players when their value has not reached its maximum, and assuring a profit in case they are sold in a near future. A pretty good example is Robinho, for whom Real Madrid paid 24,5 million Euros to Santos in 2005, and sold the Brazilian to Manchester City for 42,5.
