Events That Have Been Held at the new Wembley Stadium
The new Wembley Stadium, opened in London in 2007, is the successor to an arena that played host to some of the most remarkable sporting events of the twentieth century including the 1948 Olympic Games and England's 1966 football World Cup win over West Germany. Although only a few years old, the new stadium looks set to match the illustrious record of its predecessor as it prepares to host both the 2011 European Cup final and the football final at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The new Wembley Stadium has already acted as the setting for its fair share of sporting glory. The first senior football game to take place at the arena was the 2007 FA Cup Final between London club Chelsea and northerners Manchester United. A near-capacity crowd of 90,000 fans watched the Londoners triumph on the day and deny the Manchester side their fourth league and cup double, with the new facilities holding up well to the challenge of such a large crowd. Fittingly, Chelsea were also the victors at the last FA Cup Final at the old Wembley in 2000.
While Wembley will forever be associated primarily with sports, it is also a leading entertainment venue and regularly hosts concerts from some of the world's biggest music acts. Probably the most significant of these was the 2007 Live Earth event which aimed to raise awareness of global warming and encourage world leaders to acknowledge and act on the dangers of climate change. Many of the biggest bands and artists on the planet including the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Metallica, Beastie Boys, Foo Fighters and Madonna performed in front of a capacity crowd on the day.
The 2010 Community Shield was memorable for another reason, as Manchester United and Chelsea again competed for the first silverware of the new football season on an artificial pitch for the very first time. The new playing surface, created using hard-wearing artificial grass fibres, was put in place to try and combat the wear and tear that had caused damage to the stadium's freshly laid natural grass pitch. The surface proved to be more than up to the rigours of hosting a fast-paced football match and became the standard for England's home internationals shortly afterwards.
With the stadium's new synthetic pitch able to cope with the wear and tear of sports and music events, the next few years will see the new Wembley host England's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign before taking on the role as one of the key venues for the London Olympics.
