Everyone's Tips To Effective Waste Management

Everywhere you turn, you hear it. The Government tells you to reduce your waste output. Your city tells you that you have to cut down how many garbage cans you send to the curb. Your neighbors look at your garbage and yell at you to sort your garbage and take your recycling out.

The truth of the matter is, there are some simple principles that anyone can implement in order to reduce their waste. Depending on where you live, they may be called the Three R's or the Four R's. Reduce. Reuse. Renew. Recycle. We hear the words every day. But what do they mean for you as an individual or as a business?

R number one is Reduce. Reducing is the first of the principles of waste management, but if often the last one that people implement either personally or anywhere else. It is difficult to reduce when you feel the need to buy the latest greatest new products. Stop. Now.

R number two is Reuse. While it sounds fairly simple, you would be amazed how many products can be reused before being disposed of. Many people consider all sorts of products as being single use only. Obviously, if you are using plastic freezer bags to hold raw meat products, you will not want to reuse them, even if you have cleaned them thoroughly after. However, there is no reason that you can not reuse a sandwich bag more than once provided that it has been cleaned between uses and that no raw meat products were kept in it. Consider also reusing tin foil, bread bags, plastic containers, jars, water bottles, until they break down and can no longer be used before throwing them out.

R number three is Renew. Sometimes your household effects break down. Rather than jumping onto the "buy something right now to replace it" bandwagon, it is important to develop the ability to repair your household items. Do not just throw your vacuum cleaner away - see if you can repair it and continue to use it for another year or so.

R number four is Recycle. When you recycle products that have exhausted their use, you help to return these products to a facility that can break these products down into materials that can be used over and over again. Remember to sort your garbage. Put your clear glass into a separate container from your colored glass, put your plastic packaging into another container, and your paper products into another. Depending on where you live, you may even be able to participate in a community compost program, or you can always just compost in your own back yard (or do vermicomposting).

Part of effective waste management is simply keeping products out of the landfill. Sometimes you have simply lost interest in something that you have. Whether it is fishing, or camping or even air brush painting someone, somewhere would love to find these items. Rather than dumping them in the garbage and declaring them a lost cause, find a way to return some value to your wallet. There are plenty of places online where you can list items for sale or trade and somebody would love to take these unwanted things off your hands and give you a few bucks for them.

The toughest part of waste management is simply not buying things you don't really need. Be honest with yourself, before making a purchase, about whether you truly need that item or not. Do you really need to get a new one, or can you find what you are looking for used, and for a fraction of the price? When you practice these four R's regularly, you can effectively reduce your waste and do your part for the environment.
