Executive Level Interviewing - Tough, But Doable
Be confident, not arrogant
Be confident, not arrogant
Engage the interviewer with eye contact dont look all over the place. Show the interviewer that you are focused on him or her.
Do your homework on the firm with whom you are interviewing with, get intimate with your target company. If you don't care enough to research a company when you are applying for a job, why would I think that you'd be a good team member after you are hired? Simply stated, if you dont do the work somebody else will and that person will have a major advantage over you when it comes to receiving a potential offer.
Understand the role you are applying for and prepare talking points in your head as mental channel markers so that you are prepared to go with the flow of the conversation. Prior to your interview, attempt to predict what they are going to ask and be equipped with a good amount of knowledge in order to answer those inquiries. This goes back to the previous bullet-point, but it is a must if you want the job.
Show flexibility with change. Dont come into the interview with an agenda. Keep an open mind as you should always hear the employer out. Dont go into an interview with any expectations. In all actuality, things may turn out better.
Never let them see you sweat, desperation doesn't work in dating or when interviewing for a job. These days, a lot of people need a job. However, act as if you were playing Texas Holdem. Dont show your cards before the interviewing process is through.
Practice your elevator pitch before the game. Remember the marketing tenet of frequency and continuity of messaging. People dont like talkers. When somebody asks you about yourself, be able to answer in a concise and interesting manner.
Stay focused on the interviewer and the company. Do not focus on yourself. Keep in mind that part of the interview of to gauge whether or not you are interested. Listen to the interviewer; learn about the company and subsequent position. Additionally, this will allow you to better decide whether or not you would be happy at the position.
Don't speak in the 3rd person. This is somewhat a given; however, professionals still do it. If nothing else, frankly, speaking in the 3rd person sounds odd and can get quite annoying. Once you get annoying to an interviewer, the interview promptly ends and so does the chance of you obtaining an offer from your targeted company.
Minimize the "I's"
Emphasize team, cross-discipline collaboration and the ability to lead. Companies already have average people. When interviewing with C-level executives, they want your thought process to be one which is conducive to leadership and productivity.
Avoid the temptation to oversell yourself....Try listening and then responding to the answer.
