She said: "Make a real attempt to learn the local language and culture. Wherever an expat assignment may take you, it will likely be very different to what you are used to - though an American family posted to the UK will, for example, have an easier time adapting than one that is assigned to China or Egypt."

As well as learning the language before moving to Belgium, moving to Germany or anywhere else, people should find out about the habits and customs of the country or the region, the writer advised.

She remarked: "Proper preparation is one of the keys to a successful posting. Too many people go into a posting without having done their homework and jeopardise their family's chance at a great experience."

Meanwhile, Ms De Wolf also suggested that people should talk openly about any issues they may have and should listen to and support one another. It is also vital that expats maintain routines and stay in contact with their loved ones at home. Meanwhile, children should be given a say in how things are done, she claimed.

In further advice for those taking youngsters to start life in a new country, she pointed out it is mistake to rush finding a school. Rather, time should be spent ensuring the right education centre is chosen.
