Expert Model Craft Realistic Armour Finishing Techniques
Expert Model Craft Realistic Armour Finishing Techniques
As most modellers know, building a model and getting it right are one thing. Getting the painted finish on the model to look realistic and toned to look less like a solid coloured block is another.
There are many painting techniques that enable modellers to step away from a single colour of an Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) which most of us have done in our early days. One is washes to blend and tone base colours, the other is weathering to make an AFV model that looks as though it has seen action, not just rolled out the showroom
This DVD covers good examples of both. The DVD shows how modeller and Editor of Tamiya Modelling Magazine Marcus Nicholls has developed his skills to enable him to meet the demands of publishing deadlines. This development of quick working without loss of quality is a boon to us all with limited modelling time. However, this is not a speed build/finish DVD, this is good solid technique without taking an age to accomplish

The biggest part of the main programme shows Marcus working on a base coated Tamiya 1:35th T55. With various techniques and mediums, Marcus goes on to cover Filter Washes, Weathering and detailing all aimed at a fairly quick way of achieving a realistic finish to your vehicle.
This is broken down into chapters consisting of
Colour Wash
Paint Chipping
Rust and Staining
Burnished Metal
On Vehicle Tools
German Panzer Grey (How to get realistic look)
All this information on a DVD is all well and good but trying to find a specific area or subject that you want to re study can be a pain if you have to keep zipping backwards and forwards through the DVD to find it.Well the Menu system has been well thought out in this case and there is a 27 heading index to enable you to quickly locate the are you require, very nicely done and turns the DVD into a very good reference tool.
The solid tone of the base colour is first shaded and toned using oil based filter washes to make subtle shading tones to the model. Pin washing is then covered to bring out edge detail with good demonstrations of correcting over doing it.
This is followed by a freehand camouflage pattern with a switch to acrylics to replicate wear and chips in the paint. One of the really good things about this great DVD is the mixture of paint mediums, really well covered and explained. On this model, and another, Marcus then goes into demonstrating weathering and track detailing using a variety of mediums including pigments and graphite pencil. He then goes on to describe, and demonstrate, good solid techniques for painting various types of tracks.
This is a good DVD for anyone who wants to take their painting from the single solid colour stage to a more realistic look. It takes features from many techniques and condenses them into a single strategy for getting the job done. It does not go into great detail why these different techniques do what they do but this explanation is not required unless you want to specialise in single particular techniques, there are other DVDs that cover them in greater detail. But, this is a great example of someone who has taken knowledge of various techniques and uses exactly what he wants from them all to achieve his goal.
