Exploring Coaching Certification In The Icf-approved Coach Training

Executive, Career, Life, or Business Coaching is a strategic partnership in which

the coach empowers the client to clarify goals, create action plans, move past obstacles, and achieve what the client chooses. The Executive, Career, Life, or Business Coach serves the client with a focus on possibilities and follow-through by expanding awareness and developing strategy.

Coaching is a unique profession with unique processes that provide amazing results. The oft-cited Manchester Inc. study states the ROI is 570% and that is right in line with a multitude of additional studies. This ROI is different from other professions and processes. Ensuring the quality of coaching means following a Code of Ethics plus developing the skills through coaching certification to really understand your client, communicate effectively, ask powerful questions, and expand thinking.

Because coaching is used widely and simultaneously often misunderstood, a process for coaching ensures that the work with a client stays on track for their desired outcomes. In the ICF-approved coach training program at the Center for Coaching Certification, this begins by recognizing the coaching client as a whole person.

Another significant consideration is that coaching is NOT psychology, psychiatry, counseling, therapy, or social work. Each of those professions requires separate training and licensing -and with good reason. Those professionals diagnose, focus on addressing problems from the past, give advice, and / or prescribe. Practicing without a license is illegal and there are cases where a "coach" was actually practicing mental health without a license.

A coach is NOT a mentor, an advisor, a consultant, or a friend. (Note: it is possible to coach a friend depending on the relationship and the boundaries established for coaching.) Each of these rolls calls for giving advice. At the same time, there are many situations where serving in more than one role benefits the client. The key is recognizing which role is being played when and openly discussing that with the client.

What does a coach do? A coach is a sounding board that expands and challenges the thinking of the client. A coach provides perspective and focus. A coach works with the client as the client develops their strategy. A coach serves as an accountability partner and a motivation partner.

At the International Coach Federation, ICF, members are required to have 60 hours of coach training, and coach members must subscribe to the Code of Ethics, abide by it, and be held accountable by the ICF. Coaches and clients alike are well-served to use the ICF Code of Ethics as a foundation to their working relationship.

There are four areas the ICF Code of Ethics covers:

Professional Conduct at Large: As professionals, coaches are called upon to accurately portray their experience and education, respect the contributions of others, and know their own limits.

Conflicts of Interest: Coaches avoid conflicts of interest and when one arises disclose it so the client is aware and has choices.

Professional Conduct: Beginning a coaching relationship with honest insight as to coaching outcomes, the boundaries and the freedoms, and the nature of the coaching relationship covered in a clear agreement supports long-term success.

Confidentiality: Confidentiality is paramount in coaching so the Code of Ethics provides for protection of the client by ensuring all records are confidential and protected, and that there is agreement with the client before releasing any information.

The more coaches and clients build their coaching relationship on the foundation of identified roles and ethics, the more the process of coaching benefits.
