Meaning Elephant Island in Thai, Koh Chang can be found in the east of the country

, close to the border with Cambodia. While Koh Chang is one of Thailand's most popular islands, it has managed to maintain much of its natural beauty, at least for now. Those who have plenty of time to spare will be able to spend several days exploring the main attractions of Koh Chang, which range from traditional Thai temples to natural features such as waterfalls and sandy beaches. Here are just a few of the main attractions that can be found on this large and lovely Thai island.

Natural Attractions:

Tan Mayom Waterfall

One of the major stops on most jungle trekking tours, Tan Mayom Waterfall is one of Koh Chang's most stunning natural attractions. Kings Rama V and Rama VI once visited this enchanting three-tiered waterfall, and after following a path through a lush durian orchard, visitors will be able to see the stones on the cliff where the two great rulers signed their names.

White Sand Beach

One of the mot beautiful stretches of sand on the whole of Koh Chang, White Sand Beach attracts large numbers of sun worshippers. A large number of excellent hotels and resorts can be found close to the beach, and this is the perfect place to chill out for those who like to be in the thick of things. Those who enjoy water sports such as snorkelling and kayaking will also be able to hire equipment from many of the companies that can be found close to the beach.

Wat Khlong Nonsi

While a large number of pretty temples can be found on Koh Chang, Wat Khlong Nonsi is one of the most famous. People from all over Koh Chang come to worship here and visitors who dress respectfully are welcome to venture inside to admire the lavish temple dcor.

Historical Attractions:

Koh Chang Remembrance Site

A popular attraction with history lovers, Koh Chang Remembrance Site can be found in the north of the island, and many visitors will be able to walk her from the Koh Chang hotel. Two battleships belonging to the Thai Navy were sunk here during the 1941 Indochina War against the French, and this once bloody site, where 36 sailors drowned, has been transformed into a popular dive site.

Located at White Sand Beach, visiting Koh Chang Monkey School is an unforgettable experience and visitors will have the change to interact with the animals here and discover their talents. Bang Bao Fishery Village

A popular attraction with those who are interested in culture, Bang Bao Fishery Village is famed for its stilted houses, which are built in the traditional style. This small community is intent on preserving Koh Chang's fishing traditions and this remains the main form of livelihood for the people who live here.

Ban Kwan Elephant Camp

Trekking through the jungle on the back of an elephant is an unforgettable experience this activity is available at the Ban Kwan Elephant Camp. Most of the elephants on Koh Chang are former working elephants, which are taken here after they retire. In exchange for providing visitors with short treks through the jungle, these mighty elephants are feed and housed and the Ban Kwan Elephant Camp is supported by the Asian Elephant Foundation, who closely monitor the conditions here.
