Exterior Remodeling Projects For Your Home
There are many reasons to remodel your home's exterior
. You may need to replace your roof or install new windows to make your home more energy efficient. The front walkway or front stairs may be disintegrating and need replacing. Or you may just want to improve your home's appearance; doing so enhances its curb appeal and is one of the best ways to improve resale value.
Siding: Also called cladding, siding insulates the house, protects it from the weather, and enhances the home's appearance. Siding options come in a variety of price points, but most homeowners find it helpful to pay more for high quality siding that will be durable and long lasting and will require less maintenance. Wood siding options provide a look that many homeowners like, but engineered wood looks the same while offering superior durability. Vinyl siding is usually the most inexpensive option and offers various colors and styles. Fiber cement siding mimics the look of wood or vinyl and is cheap, easy to install, and durable. Ultimately the siding option that is best for you depends on the look you prefer and the area you live in.
Walkways: The walkways that lead to your front and back doors are a vital component of your home's exterior appearance. Ideally the walkways should mirror the home's architectural style and should harmonize with the surrounding landscaping. For instance, a classical home might do well with a brick walkway, while a cottage might look good with worn, weathered-looking bricks or stones. A home with a stone exterior might look best with a winding walkway created from irregularly shaped stones. If you're putting a pathway through a front or back garden, you might consider creating a walkway from individual flagstones which are surrounded and softened by plants and flowers.
Porches: If you want to improve your home's curb appeal, think about changing the front porch or portico. Many homes built in the '60s and '70s have very small porticos which are little more than a place to be sheltered from the rain while you're opening your front door. However, large front porches are becoming more popular these days. Many homeowners like the idea of sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch and enjoying the outdoors. In addition, there's no doubt that adding a porch changes the appearance of a house. If the exterior of your house seems bland or if it looks like all the other homes in your neighborhood, adding a porch will set your home apart.
