Extreme Couponing - How To Make The Most Of Stockpiling

The art of stockpiling is essential to all extreme couponers

. Stockpiling is all about storing food as well as non-food items and keeping them until such time as you can use them. Your stockpile will consist of toiletries and food and when you run out of any item, you can just get another from your own stockpile. Stockpiling is in fact, a great way to be prepared for any type of crises such as unemployment, natural disasters and even illness.

The Difference Between Hoarding And Stockpiling

However, I do want to make it very clear that stockpiling is not the same as hoarding. Hoarding is a compulsive, obsessive behavior that is characterized by the following;

- Attaining and not wanting to get rid of items that dont seem to have any value to anyone else (papers, newspapers, old clothes etc.)

- Making the home unlivable due to the amount of clutter

- The hoarding behavior places acute distress on the persons social or work life

The biggest and most noteworthy difference between hoarding and stockpiling is this; Stockpiling is purposeful and helpful while hoarding is not.

How Stockpiling Saves You Money

When you buy a lot of the products you normally use while they are free or on sale, you save yourself a lot of money. Sales come in cycles; so buying as much of that specific item based on how much your family will use of that product until it goes on sale again is what stockpiling is all about. Buying items at a hugely discounted price is going to save you money, and not having to buy that item at full price again is an added bonus. Once you have a lot of these types of items, you will never have to pay full price for them again and your grocery spending will get less and less, the more you stockpile.

The Principles Of Stockpiling

1. Calculate how much you would be willing to spend for specific items and stick to it. A good price is normally 75% or more off the regular selling price.

2. Calculate how much of that particular item your family would use in 3, 6 or 12 months taking into account the sales cycles. If you watch the sales cycles you will be able to determine how long it will be before items go on sale again, and use that information to calculate how much to buy of that item when it is on sale.

3. Find a good place for your stockpile. Try to avoid the most obvious choice of the kitchen; think about any other space in your home that is not used very much but has good access. Besides good access, make sure the storage room does not have excessive moisture or heat which could cause some of the items to go bad.

The Benefits Of A Good Stockpile

A well stored stockpile can give you a sense of security knowing you have all these products available to you if there is ever an emergency situation. Also, you will be able to give to the less fortunate should you find you have too many products and your family is not going to be able to use them before their sell-by date.
