Facebook Messages - What's the Deal?
If you haven't noticed already, there has been a lot of recent media hype surrounding Facebook's new message system. Currently, this Social Media platform allows you to private message people on Facebook that you are either friends with or would like to become friends with. With the new Facebook messaging system it appears that it is going to be a fully functioning webmail service, combining SMS, IM, email and private Facebook messages together into one messaging system via Facebook.
Back in November 2010, Facebook released on their Blog that they would be "providing an @facebook.com email address to every person on Facebook who wants one." Via this email address, even those that have friends, family or colleagues (for example) who aren't on Facebook, will still be able to contact them.
If you are interested in having a @facebook.com email address you will get what is commonly referred to as your Social Inbox', where all of your messages will be stored. This new interface will incorporate texts, chats, Facebook messages and emails all in one area.
From your Social Inbox' you will be able to look back in time and view past conversations. Referring to Joel Seligstein in his Facebook blog entry - See the Messages that Matter : "They will have the conversational history with the people in their lives all the way back to the beginning: From "hey nice to meet you" to "do you want to get coffee sometime" to "our kids have soccer practice at 6 pm tonight." Interesting concept!
We have noted some key features of the new interface from the Facebook help section below:
- Faster interaction: If you want, you can send messages just by hitting your Enter key, so the new Messages are as fast as an in-person conversation.
- Integrated communication: No matter what you're using to communicate (Facebook, mobile or email), your conversation streams quickly and seamlessly into one place.
- Smart filtering: You'll always see what's important to you first messages from the people you're close to take precedence over mailing lists.
- Revamped search: Search for either the person you were talking with or what you were talking about to quickly find your message and all the related context.
- Adding people to group conversations: Loop new people into the conversation, giving them full access to everything that's been said so far.
- Forwarding: Pass individual messages along to other friends.
- Unsubscribing, or removing yourself from a conversation: Leave a group conversation when you no longer wish to receive new messages.
- Sending attachments: In addition to sending links, photos and videos, you can now attach external files to your messages.
