Factors Which Effect The Choice Of Fragrance

There are so many factors and variables which effect the choice of fragrance that

it is impossible to list them all of them or to cover every possible combination. We will stir the waters just a little bit here and give you some insight to some of the influences that affect the choice and the effects of different fragrances.

Im sure that you know that fragrances are used to change, create, or enhance mood. Initially natural fragrances were the mainstay but now there are a large number of excellent synthetic fragrances which are used to produce the same or greater effects. Many times the synthetic fragrances are much better than the natural. Initially essential oils were used for fragrance as well as for their health and healing effects. Many businesses use fragrance to create a lighthearted or relaxed mood in customers in order to induce them to buy goods or products. I use fragrance in my retail store to create an effective business attitude. When a customer walks in the door his or her nose is assaulted by the aroma of various fragrances which makes a good first impression. Ninety percent of my customers will sample the fragrances available and a good many of them will purchase. If they dont purchase immediately at least a lasting impression has been made.

Fragrances have a positive effect on health. Essential oils may do so by the actual molecules of the oil which enter the blood stream through the nostrils. Perfume or colognes may just have an overall health effect because of their positive effects on mood.

Color is added to fragrance to produce specific effects. It really doesnt affect the fragrance at all but is added according to customer preference. Certain types of people will choose certain fragrances. Perfumers will add color to match the desired effects of the ingredients of the fragrance. The overall effect is called the theme of the fragrance. Perfumes and colognes are marketed to certain types, or age groups of people.

Studies have found that certain personalities prefer certain colors and hues of colors. Extroverted people with a can do personality prefer reds, orange, yellow, and green. These are also active colors to be used at certain times of the year. They go with light, floral, mint, and citrus fragrances. These are not hard and fast rules by any means. The perfumer may decide to go against the grain to produce a different effect or mood with the fragrance.

Introverted persons generally seem to prefer light pastel type colors. Persons who are extremely introverted may prefer dark deep colors and fragrances. Heavy fragrances are used for introverts with the heaviest being the oriental type fragrances. These are the fragrances which are best suited for nighttime or winter use. Once again remember that these are not hard fast rules but are general guidelines and depend on the situation and the temperament of the wearer and those who experience the fragrance on the wearer.

Personality, along with emotions art definitely the major influences on the fragrance that a person chooses to wear. The name of the fragrance is chosen in order to reflect its character which should appeal to a certain personality type.

Other factors which influence the fragrance that a person will choose are lifestyle, emotions, events, habits, and seasons. These are some of the factors which influence the makeup of fragrances but there are more variables than we can list. You can see why the creation of perfumes is a science and an art form.
