Creating a digital family tree video is one of the best ways to preserve your family history in an easy to share and durable way.

As a genealogist, you've poured through many old boxes of family photos and heirlooms. And you may have even run across an old box of films or VHS tapes and wondered how to incorporate them into your family history so others can see them.

Did you know that the best way to preserve those treasures is to digitize them? That's right; a family tree digital video is an excellent way to showcase your family history.

However, this is a job best left to the professionals. Very old films from say. . the 1950s become quite fragile and the possibility of completely destroying them is quite high if you don't know what you are doing. In some cases, even the professionals cannot guarantee the safety of such old film, but to have even a shot at success, you'll need to hire someone with experience working with old, fragile film.

Old photos should also be handled with care, but are definitely less fragile than old film. VHS tapes should all be easy to digitize unless they've been stored in extremely poor conditions.

If at all possible, it's best to give only copies of your most precious old photos or VHS tape to the professional of your choice whenever possible. You can very easily scan your old photos using a simple home scanner and send the digital copy to the professional attached to an email or saved on a flash drive.

Keep in mind that a professional will edit down the material that you send them. This means you will need to send them many more hours of material than you will end up with. But this is ultimately a good thing because they your original films and videos to leave only the more exciting moments. This will make viewing your final DVD so much more interesting!

Be sure that you don't limit yourself to existing media though. Remember you can always use your own digital camera to record new material from your relatives specifically about your family tree. You can also take the camera out and record old homesteads, grave stones, or special collections that a family member has. Whether their hobby is woodworking or restoring old cars, including this in your video will help give future generations an idea of the person behind the names.

You should expect a typical professional to take about one to two weeks to complete your family digital video. If you provide a lot of material or the company has many customers before you it may take a bit longer. The wait will be worth it though because you'll have a treasure that will last a lifetime!
