Fashion East: New Skills Shows For Second Season
A highlight of every London Fashion Week schedule
, Fashion East is a must-see on every show-goers list.
James Long's collection combined elements of his instantly recognisable use of leather, print and knits, and featured dresses, clutch bags, skirts and tops comprised of layered strips of divergent fabrics. The addition of tassels, beading and sequins to each garment combined to create a collection of truly dramatic, show-stopping pieces.
Maarten van der Horst, an MA graduate since Central Saint Martins, has already generated a lot of buzz around his debut collection last season, and his follow-up this time undeniably didn't disappoint. Combining technically advanced yet highly wearable clothes, which cannot fail to make you smile with their colourful prints, the pieces focussed on tailoring and feminine detailing, but always remained true to his signature flattering boxy shape. Oversized roses featured on basques and skinny tapered trousers, whilst pinstripe shirts, playsuits and clutch bags within an array of candy colors lent a feeling of freshness and exuberance to the range.
With both designers trained within womenswear, Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida subscribe to the Helmut Lang school of idea, where " is about stance, not hemlines". While their aesthetic evokes raw effortlessness, the pair's technical sensibilities are revealed in the construction of each piece. Their autumn/winter collection comprised of layers of destroyed denim, which had been ripped up and reassembled into shorts, dresses and capes. Footless socks completed off each look, and the addition of accessories such as hats and clutch bags added a unique look.
Founded within 2000 by Lulu Kennedy, Fashion East has kicked off the careers of some of the UK's most talked about designers, including Jonathan Saunders, Meadham Kirchhoff, Louise Gray, Richard Nicoll and Henry Holland.
Receiving sponsorship funding from Topshop, Topman and The London Development Agency, each season Fashion East offers three womenswear and three menswear designers the opportunity to present a catwalk collection to the international press and buyers attending London Fashion Week. Designers get a bursary, free venue and full runway performance production, professional runway photographs and video.
This season the autumn/winter 12 line-up was the first time that the designers from the previous season - James Long, Marques Almeida and Maarten van der Horst were given the opportunity to performance again. Sarah Mower, British Style
Council's Ambassador for Emerging Talent and US Vogue Contributor, explained the reasons for this decision: "Fashion East's 2012 cohort of designers excelled so remarkably that all their spring collections have already been picked up by stores - so having them back to show together again for Fall 2012 will provide buyers and journalists a second chance to spectate as these contenders take off within Olympic year."
