, it is important to reduce your stored body fat. However when we lose weight we may also do this by losing muscle mass. In fact, muscle by volume weighs more than fat. Losing muscle mass however is not a good way to lose weight, as it will damage, rather than enhance our overall condition. So how do we burn fat not muscle when we are losing weight. When you have decided to get into shape and lose some weight, one of the first things you will probably do is look for some information to help you to achieve your goal. Unfortunately many of the advice available is misguided or wrong. For years we have been told the best way to lose weight is to change our diet and combined with this take some exercise. This is of course right, however the advice has always been to take intensive aerobic type exercise. Some exercise plans recommend up to 60 minutes a day on a treadmill bike or stair climber. This aerobic exercise will get rid of fat, however there are several problems with this type of workout.
The first problem is with the strain this kind of high impact exercise puts on your joints, strain which can lead to problems later in life. The other one is the way your body perceives this kind of exercise. If you push your body to the limits day after day your body reacts by becoming bigger and stronger, as it perceives this as some kind of threat you are escaping from. It does this because becoming bigger will help deal with this perceived threat. The reason stems from the flight instincts that are built into our bodies, instincts which developed when we used to have predators chasing us. Building bulk like this is not good and is not the kind of optimal condition we are looking for.
The ideal kind of exercise for optimal fat burning, and body condition is interval resistance training. This kind of workout is slower and involves your body resisting against weights etc. It is low impact, and if you use the correct mix it will exercise every bit of your body. However it wont put your body into defense mode, rather it will build muscle sensibly and evenly. Taking resistive type exercise also incorporates very short rest periods to further encourage fat burning, and increase metabolism as you get a good cardio workout at the same time.
If you combine this kind of resistance training with a sensible properly balanced diet, (that is one which encourages your internal furnace to burn even more body fat,) you will gain the maximum benefit from your efforts. Eating the right food and taking the right exercise will turn your body into a healthy efficient fat burning machine. These rules apply to men as well as women, and over time will become second nature. Therefore you will find it much easier to stay in shape, and stay healthier, because your body will become conditioned to burn fat not muscle.
