The Federal Pell Grant was originally known as the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant Program which was created in 1972. It was later changed to Pell Grant as recognition to the dedication and passion of Senator Claiborne Pell in helping out financially-challenged students, including single mothers. This scholarship grant is offered to high school graduates and college undergraduates who are experiencing financial needs. Unlike loans, the grants are given for free. Its recipients do not have the obligation of repaying the amount awarded to them. To qualify for the Federal Pell Grant, you should be a US citizen, US national or an eligible non-citizen with a valid Social Security Number. To determine if you are truly in need for financial assistance, you should fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FSFA) from. An eligible recipient has an annual income of below $30,000, though individuals with $60,000 annual income can also apply. Along with the FSFA, you must submit necessary documents such as high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate. If ever you do not have the abovementioned documents, you have an option to take a test that demonstrates your ability to benefit for the grant. It is also important that you are enrolled in an accredited school, taking up a first undergraduate degree or education. When approved, you may be awarded with $400 to $5000 depending on your financial needs. This includes tuition fees, book allowances, board and lodging, your course duration and your status, whether you are a full time or a part time student.
