If they placed a swinging system up they would have to leave enough of the property free from obstruction so the gate could be opened and closed. On the barbed wire fences that surround the cattle pasture you are likely to see no gate at all. Many cattle ranchers use the cattle guard at the opening to the pasture. The cattle guard installs in the ground and does not actually obstruct entrance to or from the pasture. The person delivering hay and things to the animals does not have to stop and open a gate before they drive in. The cows will not cross the guard because the design is impossible for them to walk across without their feet going through the bars. These are convenient for the rancher and they are also inexpensive to maintain.
On the old picket fences that were built around so many yards there was usually a wooden gate constructed to allow entrance to the yard. This piece generally resembled the design of the rest of the fence and it was placed on hinges that swung it open and closed. There was generally a latch so the owner could keep the item from swinging in the wind.
